A Star Called Love

“Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is Love.” 1 John 4:8 (NIV)

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov’d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.

Wiliam Shakespeare Sonnet 116

Dear Fixed Star,

You are the Perfection Shakespeare captured in his sonnet about love. True Love is a Person. It is You, the One Who looked on our imperfection and did not bend to remove, but to redeem. You know we are mere dust and You give grace upon grace, light upon light, faithfulness upon faithfulness. We are shaken by life’s storms, but we can trust we are always following the path, heading in the right direction, ever toward You, our Light and Star. Your pleasure in us does not fade even though our youth or vigor do. Our ability to see You, hear You, know Your worth, grows daily. You become more dear over time as we journey through a fallen world to Your unimaginable one. You went into the doom of judgment for our sake. You embraced the judgment we could never bear. Because of Your Love, we can now love You, ourselves and others lavishly and graciously, like You do.

Jesus, You hitched my wagon to Your Star. I am held fast by the unbreakable cords of Your Character, Your shed blood, and Your Word. In You is everything desirable. In You, my life is revealed day by day until the full Day. (Prov. 4:18) Where You go, I will follow. (Ruth 1:16) For even the darkness is Light to You. (Ps. 139:12) You are my Fixéd Star that moves in my life illuminating my darkness. (2 Sam. 2:29) Glory to You!
